Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality
Philosopher Michel Foucault argued that sexuality is socially constructed and historically shaped by power structures rather than being an inherent biological truth. His work deeply influenced queer theory, questioning how societies regulate and define sexual identities. According to chapter 1 of Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach, "By rejecting the idea that something called sexuality exists in all of us, waiting to be liberated, Foucault’s work challenged not only how sexuality was understood in popular and scholarly discourses but also how power was understood." (Miller, 2022)[1] .
