New South African Constitution
South Africa became the first country in the world to include protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation in its constitution. This legal recognition set a global precedent for LGBTQ+ rights. Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach states that it, "enshrined protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The increase in studies on postcolonial LGBTQ+ rights and gender nonconformity and sexual minorities in Africa constitutes a relatively recent pan-African political movement" (Russo, 2022, Ch 2). South Africa was a change maker in the world, helping to support their LGBTQ+ community.
