Indigenous Groups Adopt the Term "Two Spirit"

Indigenous North American communities reclaimed the term "Two Spirit." Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach states that a two spirit is, "A modern umbrella term used by some Indigenous North Americans to describe Native people in their communities who fulfill a traditional third-gender (or other gender-variant) ceremonial role in their cultures" (Russo, 2022, Ch 2)[1] . The term acknowledges the historical presence of non-binary and LGBTQ+ identities in many Indigenous cultures.
