Edward Carpenter’s Intermediate Types among Primitive Folk

Edward Carpenter explored same-sex relationships and gender nonconformity in various non-Western societies, arguing that diverse expressions of sexuality and gender existed across cultures. His work challenged Western assumptions about homosexuality and laid early groundwork for LGBTQ+ anthropology. By documenting these variations, Carpenter provided an early counterargument to the idea that queerness was unnatural or exclusively a Western phenomenon.
